How to Use the Electricity Bill Calculator

Follow these simple steps to calculate your estimated monthly electricity bill.

Step 1: Select Your State

Choose your state from the dropdown menu. By default, Uttar Pradesh is pre-selected. Choosing your state automatically loads the official tariff structure, telescopic slabs, and state electricity duty rates.

Step 2: Choose Consumer Category & Sanctioned Load

Select your consumer tariff category (Domestic/Residential, Commercial, Industrial, or Agriculture) and enter your Sanctioned Load in kW (e.g., 1.0 kW, 2.0 kW). This determines the fixed monthly demand charges on your bill.

Step 3: Enter Monthly Consumed Units

Enter your total electricity consumption for the month in kWh (Units). You can also use the quick preset buttons (100, 200, 350, 500) to fill common unit values instantly.

Step 4: Enable Rooftop Solar Net Metering (Optional)

If you have rooftop solar panels installed, tick the Enable Rooftop Solar Net Metering checkbox and enter your monthly solar generation in kWh. The solar units will be deducted directly from your total consumption for net billing.

Step 5: Click Calculate Bill

Click the Calculate Bill button to generate your itemized bill breakdown. You will see energy charges, slab breakdown, fixed charges, state taxes, solar net savings, and the final estimated total bill.

How Does the Electricity Bill Calculator Work?

Understanding the formula behind state electricity tariff calculations in India.

1. Telescopic Tariff Slab Calculation

Electricity distribution companies (DISCOMs) across Indian states follow a telescopic slab tariff model. Under this structure, your monthly electricity usage (kWh) is divided into progressive consumption brackets (such as 0–100 units, 101–200 units, 201–300 units, and 300+ units). Energy consumed in lower slabs is billed at cheaper base rates, while higher consumption tiers incur progressively higher per-unit rates to promote energy conservation.

2. Sanctioned Load & Fixed Demand Charges

Apart from energy charges per unit, every electricity connection incurs a mandatory monthly Fixed Charge (Demand Fee). This charge is calculated based on your approved Sanctioned Load (measured in kW) and your selected tariff category (Domestic, Commercial, Industrial, or Agriculture). The calculator multiplies your connection load by the official state DISCOM fixed rate to determine your monthly fixed charge.

3. State Electricity Duty & Statutory Taxes

State governments impose statutory taxes known as Electricity Duty on power bills. Depending on the state regulatory commission order (e.g., UPPCL in Uttar Pradesh, MSEDCL in Maharashtra, BESCOM in Karnataka), electricity duty is computed as a fixed percentage or flat rate applied over the combined total of energy charges and fixed demand charges.

4. Rooftop Solar Net Metering Deduction

For consumers with grid-connected rooftop solar PV systems, Net Metering allows solar electricity generated at home to be credited against grid electricity consumption. The calculator deducts monthly solar generation (kWh) directly from your total gross consumption to arrive at your Net Billed Units. Energy charges are then evaluated exclusively on these net units, maximizing your monthly monetary savings.

5. Government Subsidies & Final Bill Estimation

Applicable state government power subsidies (such as free unit allowances or slab concessions) are automatically factored into the total bill. By combining net energy charges, fixed demand fees, electricity duty, and deducting eligible government subsidies, our online calculator generates an instant, accurate, itemized electricity bill estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about electricity bills and tariff calculations.

Your electricity bill is calculated by multiplying your consumed units (kWh) with the applicable slab tariff rates of your state, plus fixed monthly charges, electricity duty tax percentage, meter rent, and fuel adjustment surcharges minus any eligible government subsidies.

Tariff slabs are consumption brackets established by Electricity Regulatory Commissions. Lower consumption brackets (e.g., 0–100 units) have lower per-unit costs, whereas higher brackets (e.g., above 300 units) incur higher rates to encourage energy conservation.

Yes, EBillCalculator.in includes tariff structures for major Indian states including Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Punjab, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Odisha, and more.

Yes, fixed monthly demand charges (meter charges or connected load charges) specified under each state's domestic tariff schedule are included in the bill calculation.

Yes, state electricity duty (statutory tax imposed by state governments) is calculated based on the official percentage or flat rate applicable in your selected state.

Actual electricity bills can vary due to specific DISCOM variations, seasonal Fuel Supply Adjustment (FSA) charges, power factor surcharges, arrear adjustments, prompt payment discounts, or municipal taxes not captured in base residential slabs.
